Brochure Designed for Invasive Alien Species in Ireland

Brochure Assignment (40% of module grade):

Create a brochure (2 double-sided A4 pages) on an invasive alien species (IAS) or group of IAS that are either established, recently introduced or likely to establish in Ireland. The brochure is targeted at informed individuals that require basic and more detailed information on the IAS, its distribution, likely distribution and risk of spread, ecology, economic and ecological impact and management options (including prevention, eradication, containment, control, mitigation). The species chosen and information provided on the species in the brochure should consider how it fits into the 4th National Biodiversity Action Plan and align with a chosen County Council Biodiversity Action Plan (see https://actionforbiodiversity.ie/action-plans/).

The information should be well referenced providing target audiences with citations that can be used as sources of further information if required. Cite sources as numbers within the text (e.g. [1] and list these in order at the end of the brochure. The brochure should have visual appeal, be eye catching and include images, possibly maps (use available sources like National Biodiversity Data Centre – NBDC) or illustrations (original or sourced from literature and modified) to communicate key aspects of the species and its management (e.g. species characteristics, ecology, impact, control options etc as detailed below in ‘Information covered’) and how it relates to the national and county biodiversity action plans.

    Size/length: 2 double sided A4

    Country: Ireland

Target audience: e.g. Heritage/Biodiversity officers – county council; Ranger/regional staff National Parks & Wildlife services, Teagasc advisors, Inland Fisheries Ireland regional staff.

Information covered: The brochure should at least cover the following aspects

    • Species description and related species where appropriate
    • Key identification features
    • Origin & distribution (national if established or elsewhere if on horizon list or newly introduced).
    • Likely/potential distribution – include likely habitats (e.g. Fossitt)
    • General ecology of species or group
    • Economic and ecological impacts
    • Management options to include for example, eradication, containment, control, mitigation.
    • Consider management if species typically occurs with other IAS.

Submission: To be submitted on Brightspace in assignment tab under ‘Brochure’.

Submission Date: See submission date detailed in Brightspace under assignment tab
