Project Description
Title: Exploring the regulation of nitrogen efficiency in barley.
Barley is the fourth most produced crop in the world, and nowadays production is very
dependent on high-input N fertilisers. Moreover, and due to changing climates rainfall is
predicted to increase. Under waterlogging conditions, N uptake is severely compromised.
In addition, and under waterlogging, nitrogen uptake is severely reduced, yet limited knowledge about its molecular mechanisms are unknown.
This project aims to study how barley plants physiologically adapt to waterlogging. This project will train you in techniques such as RT-PCR, western blotting and immunolocalisation techniques to investigate the physiological regulation of barley N efficiency after waterlogging stress.
- You must work on gene regulation of aquaporins in response to waterlogging stress.
- Work with RT-PCR to detect gene expression quantitatively.
